Özet
This study examines the conditions for removing Ciprofloxacin (CIP) from aqueous solutions with the aid of sulfonated poly ether ether ketone (sPEEK) polymer and its derivatives — ionic-liquid functionalised sPEEK (sPEEK-IL) and ionic-liquid and chitosan (CH) incorporated sPEEK (sPEEK/IL-CH). The effects of key parameters including contact time, solution pH and CIP concentration on adsorption were investigated by batch experiments. Characterisation of adsorbents were performed by FT-IR, SEM, TGA, BET/N2 surface area, particle size analysis and alkalimetric titration. Kinetic results showed that equilibrium was achieved in the first 60, 20 and 30 mins of contact for sPEEK, sPEEK/IL and sPEEK/IL-CH, respectively. CIP adsorption on sPEEK and composites showed the highest fit with pseudo-second order model (R2 > 0.99). Equilibrium behaviour of all adsorbents could be well-described by Langmuir isotherm. The assessment of retaining mechanisms of CIP was achieved by analysing the species distributions on sPEEK surface and CIP. The results revealed that electrostatic and π-π interactions played pivotal roles in CIP retention, accompanied by pore diffusion and hydrogen bonding. Overall, by exhibiting high capacity and rapid CIP adsorption, low-cost sPEEK and its derivatives with IL and CH show promising potential for elimination of CIP from wastewaters.
